In this video we're having a look at the five things I love about the Suzuki Samurai
0:07
Hi I'm Francois from adventurebiketroop.com and in this video we're gonna have a look at the five
0:17
things that I love about my new to me 1988 Suzuki Samurai. Now yes I know this is a bike channel
0:26
and we are gonna feature more lots more bike stuff on this channel so if you're
0:31
not into four wheels skip ahead but otherwise subscribe and stick around for
0:36
more bike stuff but in this video we're just gonna have a look at this little Suzuki Jimny or Sierra or SJ413 as it's known here or Samurai so the first thing
0:47
that I love about the Suzuki Samurai is how light and small and nimble it is I'm
0:54
riding here or driving here on my old bike tracks so when I used to ride the old XR650L
1:13
and so this is mostly used for dirt bikes it's not a wide Jeep track and it's not entirely a
1:23
single track but you can see it's very narrow no other car would fit through here and this little
1:29
Suzuki Samurai or SJ413 just easily rides through or fits through any little jet
1:36
being so light as well you don't need 4x4 or low range in most cases and even in thick sand
1:44
you can just deflate your tires and it'll just glide over the sand but up here I think it weighs
1:50
about 880 kilos that's not much I think 2,000 pounds so climbing up
1:57
hules and rocks even with this little 1300 four-cylinder engine just easily
2:03
drives up anything Now the second thing I love about the Suzuki Samurai is the fact that it's got solid front
2:28
and rear axles so it gives amazing wheel articulation. You can check here look at the rear there front wheel is still on the ground and if we look on the other side look at that and this is stock standard suspension nothing has been raised no lift standard
2:52
shocks so this thing will just go anywhere it's much simpler there's no
2:57
CV joints that can get damaged so I'm actually gonna do the old crawl test
3:02
like I used to do with the XR. Going over rocks, stumps, tree roots, you just don't have to worry about hitting something
3:10
And I mean, I think I can actually crawl under here. Let's see
3:19
Okay, I'm actually going to do it. Here we go. And remember, there's a hot exhaust under there. And we are crawling
3:32
underneath the SJ413. There we go, so it's high off the ground and because of those front and rear solid axles
3:44
you just keep the wheels on the ground all the time. And then with how many new vehicles
3:50
do we have solid front axles? The Jeep Wrangler, not even the Land Rover Defender anymore
3:55
the Land Cruiser pickups and then the actual, the new Jimny's, the Suzuki Jimny
4:02
we've got the 2010 model as well, solid front axles, just gotta love it
4:25
whoopsie I must have flooded the car from wheeling up like that oops so the third thing that I love
4:36
about the Suzuki Samurai is how simple and reliable it is it's Japanese reliability from
4:43
the late 80s it's super simple you could see it's a little small four-cylinder engine I just love
4:51
four cylinders because there's less there's one bank of cylinders it's got four valves so that
4:56
means one intake one exhaust valve per cylinder a carburetor the choke's not even working on this
5:04
one because it's got a liquid or a coolant choke but it's so hot here it doesn't matter but you can
5:10
see just just look at that space in there it's a small engine a small little car but look at the
5:15
space look at where the oil filter is no other car you can get the oil filter out without burning the crap out of your hands Small little radiator everything is easy to get to
5:27
And super simple. Still got points ignition. And then on the inside, that's what I love
5:34
So we've got these trays here. So if it's dirty, you just shake it out
5:40
And underneath there, there's no carpeting. It's just these vinyl inserts. And underneath, there's the floor
5:46
with huge drain holes, so super simple, super easy to clean out, you just spray it out
5:57
dashboard, tacho, speedo, there's actually a trip meter that started working again
6:04
when I drove home, fuel, heat, the fan actually works, everything in here actually still works
6:11
and you can even lock the cubby hole and in the back very basic two jump seats and if you flip them up
6:23
very cool is the fact that it's completely flat in here so you can load a whole lot of stuff in here
6:33
without hurting it's like a pickup truck you can see there it's just vinyl
6:36
so very simple nothing funny and everything works after 34 years so something else that's super
6:48
simple is the suspension it's got the same suspension that you get on your old oxwagens
6:53
or prams leaf blades leaf blades in the front leaf blades in the rear and that's it shock
7:03
absorbers bolt at the top bolt at the bottom super simple then number four of
7:10
the top five things that I love about the Suzuki Samurai is the flexibility so
7:15
it's a small little compact four seater but then you can also remove this hard
7:20
top at the back so this hard top comes off it's very simple there's these
7:24
little clips there's a screw in there but you just unhook four of these and you
7:30
lift off this little fiberglass top then you've got a drop top and then you have a vinyl soft top
7:38
that you can fit and you can remove this little roof again super simple there's one nut there
7:47
one at the front there one on this side and then the last one over here and that is four
7:55
and it pops off and you got a Taga top or T top how cool is that and then you can also remove the doors super simple
8:08
two screws there two screws there doors come off so this is just an amazing little flexible vehicle
8:17
and you can actually tour this a friend of mine toured this more than 5 000 kilometers or 3 000
8:22
miles in one of these from the southern tip of south africa up to the northern
8:26
edge of Mozambique for work once and he made it fine it just takes forever
8:34
so I just realized I actually mixed two of the things that I love into one the
8:40
simplicity and the interior so I have to think of another one and luckily it's so
8:45
easy with these little Samurais to think of stuff that you love so number five of
8:50
the things that I love about the Suzuki Samurai is the fact that it's so economical. It's got a
8:57
small little engine. It's very light. So even driving back on the highway, I had it floored
9:02
The carburet is dirty and I had it completely floored to the ground for five hours straight
9:08
And I still managed to get 10 kilometers per liter or that's about 23 and a half, 24 miles
9:14
per gallon. So that is actually very light considering that it needs a proper service
9:19
the valves have probably never been set before the valve clearance and the carburetor is like
9:26
I said is dirty the throttle linkage is is not working great it needs to be cleaned so I am
9:33
pretty sure that if you drive economically you'll even get 30 miles per gallon or say 12 kilometers
9:39
per liter so driving around town here because it's so light pulling away stopping it doesn't
9:44
matter it is just very economical and then also parts are cheap and freely
9:48
available it's not something it's not very difficult to find the parts and
9:52
they made these I think it's Maruti in India they made these under license so
9:57
you can find all the parts you want for very cheap on eBay and so you can keep
10:03
them running and not that they need anything because it's the Japanese
10:06
reliability so I'm climbing hules here without 4x4 no issue at all so this this car just puts a smile on your face and it puts
10:17
smiles on other people's faces the new Jimny's they all wave at you people ask
10:21
you if they want to buy it can buy it from you there's little notes in the window when you get to your car the biggest issue is probably that someone's
10:28
gonna nick it because it's so easy to open and start anyways thank you for
10:32
joining and let me know if you want to see more of the Samurai on this channel
10:36
if you have any questions and then I'll see you next time hopefully on a bike cheers
